Trip to the 2005 General Conference Session
I attended the 58th session of the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists in St. Louis, Missouri. While the session ran from June 30-July 9, 2005, I was only there from July 6-9. Here are some of the best pictures I took during this trip. I’ve posted a gallery containing more pictures.
Does the Church Need a Doctor?
I believe that Natural Church Development (NCD) is important for every church that wants to grow. And growth is at the center of the church’s mission. Here’s the outline for a sermon I preached this Sabbath that introduces NCD. If I have time, perhaps I’ll write a full-text version. For now, I hope this makes sense.
Discipleship
My friend, Dee, wrote a great article on discipleship. He’s posted his notes for a sermon he preached to fellow theology majors at SWAU (Southwestern Adventist University, Keene, TX).
Humility vs. Pride
Philippians is one of my favorite books. We’ve been studying it as a group during prayer meeting, and it seems like I’m always seeing something new in it! Lately, we’ve been in chapter 2. What strikes me about this passage is the importance of humility.
Prayer Meeting Program
I’ve been asked to write down what I’ve been doing for prayer meeting in my Marshall and Linden churches. It’s quite simple, really. Here’s what I’m doing.
Coaching for Ministry
I’ve been reading a book that is revolutionizing the way I think about ministry. The book is Coaching 101: Discover the Power of Coaching by Robert E. Logan and Sherilyn Carlton (St. Charles, IL: ChurchSmart Resources, 2003). The basis of this book is success—as they define it: To be successful, “find out what God wants you to do, and do it” (page 23). This is such a simple concept, and yet it is very profound and all-encompassing. (Read on …)
Firmness and Fellowship
The church in Philippi was perhaps one of Paul’s favorites. Philippi was the first European city of any consequence that Paul visited, and the church that he founded there was strong. It was a generous church, and one that was mostly free from problems.
How to Live Expecting the Second Coming
A couple of days ago a friend was telling me about a revival that is taking place on his college campus. The thing that the student leaders focus on is being ready for the Second Coming. So they focus on a set of sins to avoid. But is that where our focus should be? How should we live while we’re waiting for Jesus to return?
